Why write this post? You may have seen Christmas lights in your area start to change and different shades appear. These are most likely LED lights. While they have an expensive upfront cost, they are touted as 80% less energy used than traditional tungsten lights. They also are supposed to last longer than traditional Christmas lights.

While previous Christmases experienced "Tickle Me Elmo" and the Nintendo Wii, this year welcomes the Zhu Zhus. These furry little non-allergic hamsters seem to be the biggest craze! They come in 4 different colors and motor across the floor.

Interestingly enough these hamsters are not that expensive. They are probably one of the cheaper toys, if you can find them. Walmart (when in stock) is selling a 2 pack for $16.00. If you think that you could just buy the hamsters though, you are mistaken. Cepia LLC has included a whole line of hamster balls, tubes and activity toys for your hamsters. Don't worry, the price adds up after a while. Interested in what is out there, see their PDF file.

Recently these furballs came under fire when a California Company, GoodGuide.com, insisted these toys were not safe. While this accusation could have been detrimental, the CPSC cleared the hamsters quickly to keep Christmas sales revving. To read more of that story, visit the Wall Street Journal Online.

For the past week, I have been able to take a look at Google's upcoming communication tool, Google Wave. The tool reminds me of an email client, chat forum, and message board rolled in to one. While I still think it has a long way to go in the development, I feel that it is ahead of its time compared to anything else out there. My question is, is it too far ahead of its time making it an uncomfortable choice for the public?

Lets take a look at what I mean:

1. Wave's Layout:

The organization of wave is just like an email client that gives you your mail folders and contacts on the left, email messages in the middle, and a preview pane on the right side. Lets look at the similarities between Microsoft Outlook and Wave's layout.

Microsoft Outlook Layout

Google Wave Layout

Both have a three pane idea to organize the content!

2. Wave Functionality

Wave Message view

The idea of wave is to allow these messages to have ONE copy for everyone instead of creating multiple instances of everything. After you create a posting, you add people to the top of the message so they can be included in on the topic. Once they are added, they can post replies in real time, even seeing the typing added as it happens. This form of communication acts like a chat forum. You can still attach files and talk when not everyone is present just like a message board.

3. Bells and Whistles

At this stage of the game, google does not include a lot extra. They have two plugins of interest, a voting gadget to poll everyone in that message and a map viewer to place "push pins" in to various spots on a map. Many developers are working on things for the future, but right now we are only given two.

Wave Mapping and Voting Widgets

Google Wave can only get better as it gets more developed. Look for future information on Google wave in the coming months!

I recently stumbled upon a great article about getting your website a high ranking on the Internet. Sadly, the posting is very true, stating that good content does not constitute great SEO ranking. Have you ever wondered why when you search online, a lot of the top links come from forums, blogs, or wikis? This is because they have the numerous links and branch you off to a network of other sites. This means that, with all those links, your site has a more "valid" web presence. I have provided some excepts from that posting.

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TITLE: Great Content Equals Great Rankings, Right? Wrong.

-excerpt-

RAND:Chris - I think the biggest thing you've forgotten to mention is that 70%+ of the weighting/ranking used by all of the engines depends on links. If you're not thinking about how your content and pages will incent users/bloggers/writers/media/other sites to link to your work, you'll lose out to someone who does.

A while back I got riled up about the lack of SEO in startup marketing and wrote about it - http://j.mp/4q9zkh - might be relevant/useful, though I did write with a bit more anger than was likely deserved.

CHRIS: Rand - totally agree re links. But isn't getting links primarily about creating great content?

Read the article you link to btw and am in complete agreement.

RAND:Tragically, at least in my experience, the answer is a resounding no. Great content is easily missed by the web's link-heavy audience, while some pretty crummy content that's been marketed well (or made the right connections or comes from the right sources) will tend to overperform.

The web's link graph isn't a meritocracy - like everything else in life, it's a popularity contest. Those who find the best ways to distribute, promote and market their works to the audience most likely to link to it are going to succeed much more so than just the "great content" producers.

Just think of it like politics. The best, most rational, reasoned, intelligent arguments are the exception, not the rule. Instead, the conversation and media attention (and thus, public awareness) is focused on concepts that are easy to grasp, virally distributable (which often puts rumor and innuendo above fact) and fit a compelling narrative (rather than add complexity).

A post on this topic - http://j.mp/4tYThK

I would love to tell Chris that he's right, that the better the content, the better, higher quality and greater quantity of links that content earns. But, perhaps sadly, that's not the case. What those in the content world would call "better" does not always (nor even mostly) garner the links and rankings. Instead, those who have "better optimized" for attracting links tend to far outshine their peers with rankings and traffic.

This may seem like a tragedy, or even a travesty of the democratic structure the web is supposed to represent, but in fact, it's the way all marketing has worked for generations. The "best" restaurants are often family-owned, hole-in-the-wall, never-marketed-themselves joints whose fabulous epicurean creations are a secret to all but the most diligent culinary Clouseaus. Meanwhile, the affront to humanity and cooking that is Olive Garden advertises relentlessly, conducts impeccable market research and appeals to the lowest common denominator in town after town to achieve geographic and market-penetration ubiquity.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can read the entire article and articles like that at the following link: SEOmoz.org

Just remember, when you design a website, the more VALID links and connections you can make, the better off you will be (like networking)
